How to drill a borehole in Kenya; What the drilling cost entails

  1. Mobilisation

    This is the transfer to the well site of the rig, equipment, and labor. We cost mobilisation by distance. A borehole project 500kms away from our office will pay more for mobilisation than one that is 50kms away. Mobilisation costs allow for bush clearing and site preparation costs. This is to ready the borehole drilling site for the drilling rig and all other heavy equipment

  2. Borehole drilling

    This is the actual process of sinking a well in the ground in order to obtain water. The depth of sinking depends on the reading of the hydro-geological survey report. This report states the depth, amount of water expected, and the geological structure of the soil and rock underneath. The common size of the borehole well is 8 inches in diameter, but the surface section is 10 inches. Some wells are larger, going up to 14 inches in diameter

3. Casing

We line the walls of the borehole with mild steel or polyvinyl chloride (uPVC) casings. This is to keep the wall from collapsing throughout the lifetime of the borehole. We install 4mm – 4.5mm thick steel casings where the well has boulders, and where mud drilling is conducted. uPVC casings are installed in wells that lack boulders or that are rich in sand, and the water is highly saline. High salinity causes intense rusting on steel casings over time, hence the preference for uPVC casings in such wells

There are 2 types of casings

3.1. Continuous casings. They line the sections where the aquifer(s) is absent. They serve as water storage units because this is where the water is held. Surface casing are set from the mouth of the well downwards to the point where the walls are stronger. It could be as short as 3M, or as deep as 30M. Surface casings are 8″ in diameter

           3.2. Slotted casings. They line the aquifer sections to allow water into the well. The slots are 1mm to 2mm in size

4. Graveling

           It is the application of gravel sand between the borehole walls and the mild steel casings. Gravel filters soil and other impurities and keeps the casings firmly in position. Our gravel size is 2mm to 4mm, and well rounded

     5. Flushing and capping

            The well is cleaned of all chippings, a process referred to as flushing which is done after casing and also after graveling. Where casing is not carried out, flushing is done too. It is the process of pushing water within the well under intense pressure, then releasing it as a jet from the mouth of the well. Flushing allows optimal water flow from the aquifer to the well, and it precedes test pumping. In a high yielding borehole, the water within the well is used to clean it up. Where the well is low in yield, additional water is sourced for externally and added into the well.

6. Test pumping

           We draw out borehole water for 24 hours. This shows the yield of the well, recharge rate and water level. It is with this report that we determine the right solar or electric submersible water pump. Before the test pumping process, we determine the most suitable test pumping water pump and the right pipe diameter to use based on the estimated volume of water in the well. Our test pumping pipe diameter sizes are installed as;

How to grow azolla in Kenya

Nutrition Requirements

i .Light: Azolla grows well under partial shade. Growth decreases quickly under heavy shade (lower than 1,500 lux) and more than 50% of full sunlight reduces photosynthesis. This is why a shade net cover is necessary where sunlight is intense. It causes it to turn reddish brown, which reduces the nutrient value

ii. Nutrition: for vigorous production, add 20kgs per Ha of phosphorous. Cow dung slurry, and super phospahte fertiliser provides this

iii. Relative humidity : high at 80 – 90 %

iv. Growing PH: lightly acidic media at : 5.2-5.8

v. Temperature: keep it below  25 degrees centigrade for a luxurious growth. Where it exceeds this, provide a shade net cover

vi. Water: fresh water 10-15 cm in the multiplication pond, adequate water level in the pond is 4 inches

Steps on how to grow azolla

  • select a pond site in a cool shaded location. Shade minimises evaporation, and encourages rapid growth. Ensure that that the pond site is close to a water source. To produce 1kg of azolla daily, the pond will be 2M (L) x 1.5M (W) x 0.15M (D) in dimension
  • line the pond using a dam liner to prevent water loss through seepage into the soil
  • add soil mixed with cow dung in the pond. Slurry can also be used. These are mixed with water and spread uniformly in the pond
  • add 1kg of azolla culture

How to grow azolla

Maintainance

  • add 20g of super phosphate mixed with 1kg cow dung every 5 days to keep it’s growth vigorous
  • replace the azolla crop after 6 months
  • harvest the crop after 15 days by hand or a plastic scoop, then every 3 days afterwards to avoid overcrowding, and maintaining a large biomass. With good feeding, the yield is 1.5kgs – 1.6kgs every 3 days
  • clean it thoroughly to remove the cow dung smell
  • dry it or feed it fresh to livestock. It can also be mixed with other animal feeds

1. Construction material

1.1. Galvanised steel greenhouses

The steel bars used in greenhouse construction in Kenya are of various sizes depending on their position in the structure. Thicker and stronger steel bars are on the edges as anchors. The lighter steel gauge is on the roof, and also acts as the internal crop support system. The choice of thickness of the steel bars adopted depends on the greenhouse location. In windy locations, the steel bars are deliberately stronger than in calm areas.

Food grade aluminum or zinc is what Grekkon Limited uses to galvanise these steel frames to keep them from rust. All vertically placed steel bars that are in contact with the ground have a concrete base. This strengthens the structure, and holds it in place during strong wind, or a storm.

1.2. Wooden greenhouses

Hydroponic Trays: How To Make Hydroponic Fodder

Common hydroponic crops for livestock in Kenya are; maize, wheat, oat and pulses. Do not grow sorghum or pearl millet because their sprouted leaves are poisonous to livestock.

  1. Select good quality seed. Avoid broken or unhealthy seed which will not germinate
  2. Place your seeds in a basin, then add warm water. Warm water triggers germination by breaking any dominance present. Remove the seeds that float in the water; they won’t germinate. Remove too any other impurities floating
  3. Add 50-100g of salt to reduce fungal production on the sprouted seed
  4. Soak the seed for 12 hours, then drain it and run them in clean water
  5. Place the seeds in a germination chamber/ room
  6. Thoroughly clean the hydroponic trays in clear fresh water
  7. Transfer the seedlings onto the hydroponic tray, evenly spreading them
  8. Place the trays on a rack
  9. Water them with a misting system, a light sprinkler, hose pipe, or watering can to create high humidity for rapid and healthy barley growth
  10. In seven days, the fodder is ready for harvest. Your seedlings are 30cm to 35cm tall. If it remains longer in the trays, the nutritive value will depreciate, and fiber will develop
