5. What are the types of shade nets?

By material

  1. Woven shade nets. They are made from polypropylene, are heavier and allow heat build up. They withstand the most extreme exposure to the sun, and have minimum shrinkage. Woven shade nets are for shading of plants, pet kennels, windscreens, patios and for privacy. Woven shade nets are 30% heavier than knitted shade nets, and are difficult to install
  2. Knitted shade nets. They are made up lightweight polyethylene. They have an open lock-stitch design that  resists wind damage, and reduces heat build up in the net. The level of shrinkage is 2% to 3%. Knitted shade nets have better longevity in agricultural use as they resist agro-chemicals and detergents. They are preferred for shade houses, and greenhouses.

1. Construction material

1.1. Galvanised steel greenhouses

The steel bars used in greenhouse construction in Kenya are of various sizes depending on their position in the structure. Thicker and stronger steel bars are on the edges as anchors. The lighter steel gauge is on the roof, and also acts as the internal crop support system. The choice of thickness of the steel bars adopted depends on the greenhouse location. In windy locations, the steel bars are deliberately stronger than in calm areas.

Food grade aluminum or zinc is what Grekkon Limited uses to galvanise these steel frames to keep them from rust. All vertically placed steel bars that are in contact with the ground have a concrete base. This strengthens the structure, and holds it in place during strong wind, or a storm.

1.2. Wooden greenhouses

Treated timber greenhouse types in Kenya are cheaper than galvanized steel greenhouses. They have a shorter lifespan, because wood degrades faster than galvanized steel.

Growers are not to treat the timber with used motor oil. This is because it will contaminate food crops.

These metal bars are arranged in rows with a spacing of 3M between one row to the other. What Is a Hydroponic System?

Hydroponic Trays: How To Make Hydroponic Fodder

Common hydroponic crops for livestock in Kenya are; maize, wheat, oat and pulses. Do not grow sorghum or pearl millet because their sprouted leaves are poisonous to livestock.

  1. Select good quality seed. Avoid broken or unhealthy seed which will not germinate
  2. Place your seeds in a basin, then add warm water. Warm water triggers germination by breaking any dominance present. Remove the seeds that float in the water; they won’t germinate. Remove too any other impurities floating
  3. Add 50-100g of salt to reduce fungal production on the sprouted seed
  4. Soak the seed for 12 hours, then drain it and run them in clean water

  6. Thoroughly clean the hydroponic trays in clear fresh water
  7. Transfer the seedlings onto the hydroponic tray, evenly spreading them
  8. Place the trays on a rack
  9. Water them with a misting system, a light sprinkler, hose pipe, or watering can to create high humidity for rapid and healthy barley growth
  10. In seven days, the fodder is ready for harvest. Your seedlings are 30cm to 35cm tall. If it remains longer in the trays, the nutritive value will depreciate, and fiber will develop

Hydroponic fodder grows best within a temperature range of 15 to 32 degrees Celsius. The relative humidity range is 80-85%. Allow light for photosynthesis, so growing in a greenhouse or light shade house is fine

3. They have UV treatment to withstand tropical radiation, and so our delivery pipes do not crack. Each layflat hose has woven yarn reinforcement and an inseparably fused inner and outer wall.  Our delivery hoses are resistant to most oxidizing and reducing agents, as well as acids and alkalis. They do not rot and are not easily torn. This is why they have the longest lifespan in the market.

4. Lightweight. Though they are strong and durable, they are light to carry and use. They collapse when not in use, making them easy to move and store.

5. Multiple-use. In irrigation, they are attached to the pump on both sides: To suck water, and also to evacuate it from the pump. They work well with sprinklers to deliver irrigation water to sprinklers from the pump.

Drip Kit Components

  1. The main line. This is a PVC or a HDPE pipe. The choice of pipe thickness is according to the pressure of the water in it. A farmer with gravity flow has a thinner pipe than one with a high pressure water pump
  2. Water filter. To remove impurities that will otherwise block the drip pipe emitters
  3. Gate vales. They control the water movement from one point to another by opening or closing
